Drum, Stomp and Step Camp!! (all ages)

The world of percussion is vast and varied and can come from anywhere at any time.  Chris and Shane will encompass classic percussion instruments like drums to every day household items incorporating body percussion and stepping to inspire this group to create a performance piece unlike any other at Big Star.  Choose one or both, but don’t miss out on this incredible opportunity!

Rock Band Camp (5th grade and up)

Start a band and create our own signature sound.  Placement in this class will be by the instructor – group experience not required.  Guitar and bass (acoustic and electric), keyboards, percussion, vocals, woodwinds and brass are all welcome.

  • Vocals –   Must be able to sing a song with accompaniment and a cappella with excellent pith and timing.
  • Drums –   Must be able to play a song of medium difficulty and understand more complex rhythm counting. Must have great meter.
  • Guitar –   Must be able to play a song of medium difficulty and have knowledge of basic music theory. Must be able to improvise and play basic solos.
  • Bass –   Must be able to play a song of medium difficulty and have a knowledge of basis music theory.
  • Keyboards – Must be able to play a song of medium difficulty and have a knowledge of basis music theory.

A Capella and Ukele Camp! (5th grade and up)

Inspired by Glee! and Pitch Perfect, A Capella is all the rage.  Learn how to create original musical mashups, throw down some killer show choir moves and create tight harmonies that will challenge even the most experienced performers.

Fresh off an amazing win on America’s Got Talent, Grace Vanderwaal, has been the catalyst for a whole new generation of young performers to learn how to play the ukulele and begin creating musical compositions all their own.  Join Big Star’s own Elora James and start your child down the path to unleashing their inner voice through this wonderful instrument.

Musical Theatre History and Dance Camp (2nd grade and Up)

Learn about the history of musical theater, and its many eras through iconic ensemble dance numbers.  This camp will focus both on performance, technique, and history, and will leave students with a further understanding of how new types of theater influence dance style. We will learn a new dance number each day, from classic shows such as The Sound of Music to some of the current Broadway hits like Matilda and School of Rock!

Improv and Performance Camp! (5th grade and Up)

Improv class is specially designed with creative minds and play as the focus. Through the use of theatre games and mini-performances, young actors learn a variety of facets of acting and performing. Topics include character development, creative expression through movement, improv games and scene work. Students will have an opportunity to perform for each other, and will work together to develop self-confidence, team/group dynamic, body and spatial awareness.  With improv, kids learn how to:  Be positive, more creative, focus on teamwork, take risks, overcome shyness, listen and HAVE FUN!  There will be a presentation for families at the final class.

Students will work on solo and group musical theatre performances that they will perform at the end of the camp. Throughout the process we will be working on what it’s like to go through an audition, give positive and constructive feedback, getting costumes, stage presence and character development. This will show students what it’s like to perform in the musical theatre world and what to expect if that’s a path they’d like to go down, but also, it’s always fun to perform in a musical!

Music Theory & Composition Camp! (5th grade and Up)

Music theory is an essential building block for anyone who wants to move forward as any type of musician – vocalist, pianist, guitarist – you name it.  This class will lay the foundation for students to pursue a deeper understand of chord progressions, guitar charts, voice leading and composition.

Students will have the chance to explore their creativity by learning how to write their very own songs. We will explore different song writing styles, genres and how to make words on a page into a beautiful musical masterpiece. We will all collaborate together, as well as work on solo pieces. This will be a fun freeform writing class that will encourage the kids to let their voices be heard because we all have a story to tell

Improv, Costumes and Make Up Camp! (2nd grade and Up)

Learn the Stage Makeup basics and beyond. Topics will include:

  • Stage Makeup Basics, highlighting, contouring, working in small and large theatres
  • How to design character makeup – start with character
  • Old Age & Witches
  • Wigs and facial hair
  • Anthropomorphics – how do we apply human characteristics to non-human characters? We will spend an hour working on design for makeup for Beauty & the Beast (Beast, Lumiere, Cogsworth, Mrs. Potts, Chip, etc. ) and then spend time creating these characters during camp.
  • Specialty faces and characters, design and create character faces from your favorite show.

Campers are encouraged to bring a camera to record the makeup looks and designs they create. These are wonderful to help build a makeup & character portfolio. Students will learn how to apply their own makeup and also take turns applying makeup to each other.  Supply fee of $25 includes individual Student Makeup Kit that the camper will get to keep.

Theatre Camp 101 (4th Grade and Up)

This week long intensive is an amazing opportunity for focused, serious students to develop, rehearse and perform music of their selection and write an original script to create a new mini-musical all their own!  With the guidance of Mr. Chris, the students in the class will experience how to bring a performance piece to life from the ground up!

Advanced Musical Theater & Hip Hop Camp! (5th Grade and Up)

Advanced HH
Take your new Hip Hop skills to the next level.  This class builds on the basics incorporating a variety of advanced techniques including grooving, floor work, choreography and more.  Chris brings his own extensive knowledge and background in hip hop and dance to this fabulous class!  You must have at least two years of hip hop class experience to participate in this camp.

Advanced MT
This camp gives students a taste of putting on a show while developing new skills, exploring their hidden talents, and building their self-confidence. Songs and scenes from one musical will be selected for the class. This is a performance-based class and will inspire the more advanced student to focus on characterization, dialogue and on-stage verbal and non-verbal

Beginning Musical Theater & Hip Hop Camp! (1st-4th grades)

Beginning Musical Theater
Beginning MT focuses on developing new skills, exploring their hidden talents, and building their self-confidence. Songs and scenes from one musical will be selected for the class. This is a performance-based class, and each student will experiment with costumes, props, blocking and choreography culminating in their final performance.

Beginning Hip Hop
This class focuses on the movement, choreography & music of the Pop Music scene. Shining a spotlight on key personalities of this genre, from Jay Z to Beyonce. Chris brings his own extensive knowledge and background in hip hop and dance to this fabulous class!

Intro to Singing, Dancing & Acting (Pre K – 2nd grade)

Do your little star like to sing in the bathtub, put on shows with their stuffies or dance all around the house?  These camp will focus on all three of these things, giving students an opportunity to perform and have fun while learning about the basics of theater, such as stage directions and slating.  We will work on singing on pitch and rhythm, becoming a character, and using movement to tell a story. Perfect for a young performer to shine!

A Day at Disney and Harry Potter Camp! (K – 3rd grade)

“A Day at Disney” a Disney theme for each day of camp. This full day camp include: Teen Beach Movie Pirate and Princess day Pirates Of Carribean), Safari day ( Lion Jungle Book), Adventure day (Brave, Peter Pan), and finally a Showcase day show off their  skills!  In addition the  and choreography  selection, the camp’s  Arts  & Crafts  portion also revolves around that the  kids create an  art project that the camp’s theme

Does your kiddo dream of playing Quiddich and riding the train to Hogwart’s?  If so, then this is the camp for you!  The fun begins as each student is “sorted” into their proper house by Big Star’s very own Sorting Hat.  Then it’s off to make wands and “let the wand choose the Wizard.”  After that, we’ll learn some spells, make some potions, and learn plenty of wizarding theater games all culminating in fantastic demonstration at the end of this magical week long camp.

Moana and Annie Theater Camp! (Pre K – 2nd)

Designed with our youngest campers in mind choose either Moana and ride with the wind in your sails.  See how far your child can go in this hit movie musical celebrating music of the South Pacific. OR, relive the magic of Annie, the Musical featuring songs we all know and love, like Hard Knock Life and Tomorrow.  OR, even better, take them BOTH!

Gravity Ninja Camp!  (AM K – 4th, PM 5th and up)

Gravity Ninja is brand new to Big Star this year, and we couldn’t be more excited to have them here.  This camp is designed to complement and challenge any athletic background from soccer to gymnastics to martial arts and yes, EVEN DANCE!  Ms. Teresa will use Suspension training, Acrobalance, Pilates, agility training, choreography and more to increase and even surprise your child’s awareness of their physical abilities.  A final demonstration of what they have learned will be presented at the end of this session!

Pitch Perfect – A Capella Singing Camp (5th Grade & Up)

June 19-June 23rd all day camp 9am-4pm  $260.00

Taking an age appropriate spin on the art of modern a cappella singing while still paying tribute to traditional barbershop quartets, learn the basic components that make up a group a composition, be led through professional vocal warm-up techniques and harmonization exercises and then move onto the real fun! We’ll be working on pieces by Billy Joel, Bill Withers, The Eurythmics and more!

This camp is geared toward singers who can vocalize with good intonation and projection with some experience, however, music-reading is not a requirement as the focus will be more on hearing harmonies. Pieces will be learned with audio learning tracks.

Chamber of Rock String Camp (Skilled Intermediate to Advanced Strings)

August 21st-25th all day camp 9am-4pm $260.00

Who said strings can’t rock? A modern spin on a traditional camerata (small chamber orchestra), be a part of the Valley’s first-ever youth “ROCK-amerata”, playing the likes of The Beatles, Whitestripes, Bruno Mars, Foo Fighters, David Bowie and more. Violinists, violists, cellists, bassists, this will be a week of reading from exciting and unique repertoire and then we’ll bring it to the masses at a local venue that will be announced later. Get ready to rock and don’t forget your rosin!

  • Musicians must be able to sightread moderate level sheet music in their instrument.
  • Bring your own stand, a pencil and a three-ring binder for sheet music.
